07:58 pm - DIY headband?
Is there a good DIY way for me to make a sushi-chef-style headband or an armband?

I want to make 5 of them for a team. And I'll get an iron-on printer kit to put our logo on it.

Any specific materials or patterns I should use? Ideally something that requires no sewing, e.g. just a safety pin at the back, or whatever.

I really have to wonder how many people are going to get today's XKCD.

Now if only Munroe could get his sister to write a soundtrack for it. Er... wait, does he have a sister?

05:44 am - Toronto steampunk D&D
I'm running a Dungeons and Dragons steampunk campaign in Toronto soon. If you know any interested players, have them contact me here or via e-mail with some info about themself as a player and/or a general introduction so I can see what kind of person they are.

After having given up on the franchise in the early to mid 90s, 4th edition has won me back over. :)

09:40 pm - Where to find photos, drawings, etc?
Hey guys,

Anyone know where I can find some free-to-use photos / drawings of creepy stuff? I need things like crypts, tunnels, undead creatures of various types, etc. I can give credit to the artists but I can't afford to pay for images and I don't want to violate copyrights.

It's for an expansion that I'm making for the board game, Arkham Horror, which I plan on freely distributing to whoever wants it (which is why I can't afford to pay).

Thanks!

P.S. Ottawa.

08:39 pm - Canadian breakfast cereals?
I'm looking for corn- or rice-based breakfast cereals that don't have any wheat bran, granola, whole weat, raisins, nuts or fruits.

So far, I can only think of Honeycomb, Corn Pops and Rice Krispies.

Americans seem to have Corn Chex, Rice Chex and Kix, but I don't recall seeing these in Canada.

02:08 pm - Lego D&D miniatures
Is there any way to make something that resembles a human using Lego bricks, and limiting yourself to a height of 3 bricks (or 9 plates)? The best I can think of is something like this, but I'm not quite satisfied with it.

I want to use Lego bricks and plates to make Dungeons and Dragons miniatures (scale 1:60), establishing standardized shapes and colours to denote creature type, size, etc., somewhat like Nethack or 8-bit video games. The one pictured right is for a medium-sized humanoid like a human (but as small as a dwarf or tall as a minotaur or gnoll). The colour of the large body brick could denote monster origin, e.g. green for fey, black or white for undead. For natural origin, use green for orcs, goblins, kobolds, yellow for humans, brown for dwarves.

Monster role:

artillery: red head
brute: brown head
controller: blue head
lurker: black legs
skirmisher: red legs
soldier: white head

elite or leader: add extra body segment
minion: use plate instead of brick for head

I'm not sure how to design a small-sized humanoid like a goblin or halfling. It should be two bricks (or 6 to 7 plates) in height. Maybe simply remove the legs from the 3-brick-high model. Or use a 2x1 brick on top of a 2x2 brick.

For a beast type, take the humanoid model, and put the head at the end to resemble a quadruped.

If this is true it is absolutely insane. If it isn't she is either reckless with her child's life or has no grasp of prenatal care.

Sarah Palin Is NOT The Mother

If it isn't true, then who doesn't go to a doctor after their water breaks? Speeches are more important than getting antibiotics. Weird.

I hope this isn't true. It takes away from how utterly terrifiying her poltical positions are and how underqualified she is.

EDIT:

She was a Pat Buchanan supporter in 1999? She opposes birth-control and condom use even for married couples? Jesus Christ. People are already saying Thomas Eagleton.

De grege musico ISTA nomine nuper cum scripserim me fugerat pelliculam excerptam esse ex opere maiore: nam emissio Germanica nuntiandorum novorum Kulturzeit totum episodion Latinum edidit, quod per interrete spectari potest hinc.

That Latin rap video I linked to earlier, it turns out, was part of a whole episode of the news show Kulturzeit that was done in Latin. How awsome i that? Unfortunately unless you can understand Latin or read German you are not likely to get much out of it. But you can try the link above for fun.

07:46 pm - Hurricane Party
Being back in New Orleans and being back at school has been lovely.
Danny and I are thinking about subletting our place and moving into a shotgun on Annunciation and having a couple of good friends as shotgun-mates. We could have sweet parties.

It's my last real semester of college and I really like my courses so far:

Arabic I
Natural Landscape/Built Form
Infrastructure of Sustainable Urban Environments
Computer Applications in Music
The Urban Experience

It's kind of a shame that classes have been cancelled for at least the next week because of this little asshole named Tropical Storm Gustav who has decided to show up as an uninvited guest for the 3rd anniversary of The Big K.
Everyone is freaking out, all institutions are shutting down, all around me I hear "OMG where are you evacuating to!?"
As for me, well, I have a raft. I'll be quite okay. If I really must evacuate, I am avoiding all the traffic and evacuating via bicycle on the river levee path.

08:03 am - Scholars and Rogues
[info]scholars_rogues

From their main page:

Scholars & Rogues is a diverse band of thinkers, social analysts, activists, grousers, jesters, and troublemakers. We’re different in many ways, but we share a general belief in progress, a conviction that smarter is better, and a passionate distaste for convention.

S&R isn’t a current news blog, exactly. There are some fantastic sites out there where you can get quick, first-on-the-scene takes, and if you explore the blogroll you’ll see what we mean. We’re more like the editorial desk. We see our mission as comment, analysis, informed opinion, deep insight. We try to figure out what things mean, and in passing that perspective on to our readers we hope to foster a greater tendency toward critical thinking in society.

On this blog you can expect to find a wide range of subjects covered. Some of the more likely ones include:

 • Politics and the economy (duh)
 • Social issues
 • Media and journalism
 • Education
 • The environment
 • Technology
 • Business and corporate social responsibility
 • Art, literature and music
 • Popular culture (TV, radio, electronic culture, etc.)
 • Subcultures

Scholars & Rogues is one of the blogs which is credentialed to cover the Democratic National Convention this week.
